History & Mission

Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) fulfills the university’s educational mission by offering a wide range of degree programs and applied learning experiences to a broad and inclusive community of students and professionals. The educational programs found within Georgetown SCS combine theory with practice through rigorous curricula led by experts in their fields, providing opportunities for students to excel academically and professionally. In keeping with Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit heritage and values, SCS educates women and men to be self-reflective, critical thinkers who are committed to serve in greater society.
 
The School’s flexible program formats give students the opportunity to make learning work with their busy lives: full-time and part-time enrollment options, courses scheduled in the evening, supportive academic services and educators who take a personal interest in student success are all hallmarks of a Georgetown SCS education. The School provides the knowledge, faculty and resources for students, professionals and community members to meet their personal and professional goals.

History

Established in 1789, Georgetown University is one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions, offering a unique educational experience that prepares the next generation of global citizens to lead and make a difference in the world. We are a vibrant community of exceptional students, faculty, alumni and professionals dedicated to real-world applications of our research, scholarship, faith and service.

 
Today the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies offers 10 graduate degree programs and the University’s only part-time bachelor’s degree program. The School’s Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) offers more than 25 professional certificates, special programs and custom and contract education and training. The School also manages Georgetown’s Summer School, its programs for high school students and other special programs.
 
The School’s first Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs were launched in Fall 2007 by then-dean Robert Manuel. The MPS programs emphasize a balance of theoretical and applied learning through graduate-level coursework. The first MPS programs offered were in Public Relations & Corporate Communications and Journalism and the first group of MPS students graduated in Fall 2008. The School continues to add new MPS programs, with each program created to fill industry needs for educated professionals who can operate within an ethical framework.
 
The School of Continuing Studies was founded in 1956 as the Georgetown University School for Summer and Continuing Education. In its early years the School operated Georgetown’s Summer School and educational programs for the local community. In the summer of 1974, two Liberal Studies programs were launched by then-dean Joe Pettit. As the oldest degree programs in the School, the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS) and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) programs each graduated their first students—one from each program—in May 1978. A Doctor of Liberal Studies (DLS) program was subsequently launched in Fall 2005 and the first DLS student graduated in May 2010.
 
Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university and was founded by Archbishop John Carroll and his staff of Jesuit teachers. The university has developed into one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions with eight schools, an affiliated hospital and many highly ranked academic programs. Georgetown provides students with a world-class learning experience focused on educating the whole person through exposure to core human values, different faiths, cultures and beliefs. With its Jesuit values and location in Washington, D.C., Georgetown offers students a distinct opportunity to learn, experience and understand more about the world.
