On Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, Georgetown’s Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning program hosted a presentation by Joe Sternlieb, CEO of Georgetown BID. Speaking before students, faculty and community members, Sternlieb presented the launch of a new, 15-year strategic plan for Georgetown, complete with recommendations on economic development, public space and transportation.
A Successful Community Collaboration
More than eight months in the making, the “Georgetown 2028” action plan was developed by a 21-member Task Force supported by three working groups. Over 200 community members— including many Georgetown University representatives—contributed ideas and suggestions. Thanks to the successful collaboration, work has already begun on 30 of the 75 recommendations, including:
- Securing private pledges to cover half the cost of a feasibility study for an aerial gondola lift connecting Georgetown with the Rosslyn Metro Station
- Creating a Georgetown Streetcar Partnership to study options for extending the streetcar to Georgetown University
- A partnership with the National Park Service to raise funds for a new C&O canal boat to replace The Georgetown
- Locating/updating the Georgetown wayfinding signs and installing them in time to welcome visitors for the National Cherry Blossom Festival
A Leader’s View on Neighborhood Stewardship
Graduate students at the Georgetown School of Continuing Studies were excited to hear from Sternlieb, an urban planning leader with more than 20 years of experience in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining Georgetown BID, he served as VP of Acquisitions for EastBanc, one of Washington’s premier mixed-use development firms; almost 10 years as deputy director of the Downtown DC BID, leading a variety of major civic projects including the D.C. Circulator system and citywide visitor wayfinding system; and three years as staff director of the D.C. Council Committee on Economic Development, where he focused on the BID, Convention Center and Verizon Center.
