Course Description: This course will examine how journalists work in conflict situations using the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a prism. Topics to be covered include how to prepare, before you go, how to stay safe, how to use local "fixers," how to develop sources on both sides of a conflict, how to evaluate conflicting narratives, is there one "truth," how to maintain journalistic objectivity, should terrorists be given a media platform and do journalists become emotionally involved in the stories they cover? Students will be asked to choose an ethnic, religious or political conflict to focus on. Students will develop sources on both sides of this conflict using embassies and research institutes in Washington. By the end of the course, each student will have prepared a print article or radio piece on the conflict he or she has chosen as well as make an oral presentation to the class.
