Issues and Values in American Management Thought

Course Description:

The purpose of this class is to examine and analyze the evolution of American management thought from its earliest roots up to the present time. The course will trace the evolution of management thought by presenting the ideas and influences of its major contributors, with particular emphasis on the various eras in the development of management thought (such as Early Management Thought, Scientific Management, Classical Organizational Theory, the Human Relations Movement, and the Modern Era). The historical perspective on the great ideas in management will be explored and the course will also show the evolutionary nature of American management thought by analyzing how assumptions about people, employees, and organizations change with shifting social, economic, and political values. The major emphasis of the course will be a study of the contemporary approaches to management and recent trends, issues, and values in management thinking.
