Freedom and Slavery in American History

The history of American slavery and a reflection on how this history has been told, revised, and re-interpreted will shape this course.  Starting with an overview of the institution's development, the course will focus on topics such as acculturation, slave resistance, slave family life, quantitative studies of slavery, industrial slavery, and the passage from slavery to freedom, which have figured so largely in the debate on slavery.  This material would be especially useful to teachers and to all who wish to understand this significant aspect of our past and its influence on the present, as well as the ways we have tried to understand and integrate slavery in our history.
