Reporting on National Security

Course Description:
Students will learn the basics of U.S. defense, intelligence and foreign policy, and how to cover the world of national security as a journalist. Focus will be on the structure of the U.S. national security apparatus and how the 16 U.S. spy agencies fit together. Topics include rising nuclear threats, trends in terrorism, and how journalists balance the tension between aggressively reporting a story and being responsible citizens. Students will learn how to find and develop sources, think through how to manage deeply-sourced interviews and classified information, and how to sort through dense and often contradictory information on deadline.
