Introduction to Communication Theory

This class surveys theoretical approaches to human communication, including selected theories of language behavior, interpersonal and small group interaction, and persuasion, providing a foundation for more advanced communications courses. Through practical application, the course emphasizes the understanding, evaluation, and use of communication theories in daily life. Course topics include discussion and application of interpersonal, relational, organizational, symbolic, rhetorical, media, gender, and intercultural communication theories. Assigned reading includes Katherine Miller’s Communication Theories: Perspectives, Processes, and Contexts as well as supplementary readings.
