Course Description:
The course focuses on the role of mass media in American politics and the influence of the media on Americans' political attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. The media, often cited as the "fourth branch of government," have long been recognized as a key part of American politics. We will examine the nature of the news and news making organizations and discuss the role of the media in a democracy. Students will also analyze and debate some of the newest trends in news-making and political campaign media strategy, with a focus on the 2010 midterm elections.
