Issues in Globalization

The course will start off by studying the impact of the World Trade Organization (WTO) created in 1993 to promote freer trade across the globe. The specific issues that will be discussed are, first, TRIPS and its impact on global health, especially HIV/AIDS in Africa. Second, the Dispute Settlement Process of WTO will be analyzed by studying some case studies. Finally, the WTO process will be described by what has happened to the Doha Round. We shall show that there has been significant increase in Regional Trade Agreements while multilateral talks have stalled in the Doha Round. Lastly, we shall examine the labor conditions like "sweatshops" and "child labor" that have arisen over the last two decades due to freer world trade and the spread of multinational corporations.
