Catholicism at the Movies: A Critical Review of Portrayals of Faith on Film
| Course Number: | BLHV-364 |
Movies can have an extraordinary cultural influence often through reinforcing or challenging stereotypes and norms. Film is one of the few types of mediated entertainment consumed by individuals outside of their home and in the company of complete strangers (with popcorn and candy of course). We can all point to a movie that changed how we think and how we see the world. The central theme of this class is how movies that have altered or reinforced understandings of faith; specifically Catholicism. As the author of one of the course books argues, “Movie images, rather than the words of King James version of the Bible, mow make up our common ‘biblical language’…Movies produce, maintain, repair, criticize, and transform reality” (Colleen McDannell, Catholics in the Movies, 2008). From horror to comedy to passion play there is no shortage of content to study. Using movies from the last 100 years, this class explores how films have helped shape and re-shape the collective consciousness of Catholicism in the United States.
