China: From Communism to Commercialism, 1949-Present
Course Description:
The major events and ideas of China under the leadership of Mao Zedong (1949 - 1976) and, in subsequent years, under Deng Xiaoping’s new reform programs, will be examined in this course. Students will consider the origins of the Chinese Communist Party, its organization and structure; how China is ruled under Communism; China's internal developments and foreign policies; mass campaigns; and the impact of the Cultural Revolution on the Chinese people and society. Participants will question how the values and lifestyles of the Chinese people were changed during the post-Mao era and what the end of the Cold War as well as the collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union may mean in the future.
