African Politics and the Novel

Course Description:

Politics and the Novel studies change in Africa through the eyes of African novelists. Works by Chinua Achebe, Mariama Ba, and Ousmare Sembene reveal different African reactions to colonialism and Christianity, the increasing urbanization of Africa and the changing social values, the drive to independence and the reactions to the post-independence era. Novels by Andre Brink and Ngugi Wa Thiongo examine racial division and the efficacy of violence against the state. A limited amount of non-fiction will supplement the novels.
