Master of Professional Studies in Public Relations and Corporate Communications

Political Campaign Communications

The 2008 election cycle is shaping up to be groundbreaking event that will consume an increasing amount of airwaves, print, and bytes as we move closer to "Decision Tuesday." This course provides an unprecedented opportunity to examine the role of communications in the campaign environment.

Together, we will examine the process by which candidates and political parties make strategic use of communications to win votes, blunt opponents, and ultimately turn the electoral tides to gain power for their party. The course will offer an in-depth look at all aspects of political campaigns, from the use of language and imagery to persuade and influence audiences to the operational aspects of fundraising and events planning. Our schedule will permit near real-time analysis of political advertising, mainstream media coverage, and the complex "Xs and Os" strategies in play behind the scenes.

Guest speakers will include top strategists from both parties, along with experts who are using advertising, media relations, and digital communications to fundamentally change traditional campaign models.
