The Professional Paralegal

This course provides new students with an overview of the fundamentals for success in the paralegal profession and introduces the student to the profession, the relationship of the paralegal with attorneys and the community, the legal and ethical constraints of the profession, the American legal system, and practice areas. Students learn what paralegals do in "real life" and are introduced to panels of practicing paralegals and paralegal managers who provide practical advice on how to get hired, and how to thrive and survive in different legal environments. The course provides focus for further paralegal classes through sessions that focus on the following topics: an introduction to paralegalism, a law library orientation, a paralegal managers' panel, a guest panel on the topic of working in legal environments, and basic Lexis and Westlaw research training.
