Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I do not have any experience in human resources. Will this put me at a disadvantage?
A: We will admit students with differing levels of human resources and or diversity experience or no experience at all. Since each file is evaluated individually, the kind and quality of prior experience is but one of the factors in the decision to admit.

Q: How long is the program?
A: The program can be completed in 18 months full time (which requires year-round attendance) or 24 months part time (which also requires year-round attendance).

Q: When are admissions decisions made?
A: Decisions are made on a rolling basis. This means that as each completed file comes in, a decision is made. Thus, applicants are encouraged to get their completed applications in as soon as possible. Incomplete files will not be considered.

Q: When can I enter the program?
A: Students can enter in the fall, spring, or summer.

Q: What are the required courses?
A: Students in the MPS are required to take The Ethics Course and theCapstone Course. In addition they are required to take Innovation andCreativity and Strategic Thinking.Students in the APC are required to take Ethics as well as four (4)other courses which must be approved by the program Dean.

Q: What are the concentrations?
A: Strategic Human Capital Management, Diversity and Inclusion Management, and International Human Resources Management.

Q: I am concentrating in one area; however, I see in a class in another concentration that I want to take. Can I take that class?
A: You may be able to. You simply need to seek permission from Associate Dean Metzler to take the course.

Q: How soon after acceptance do I have to declare my concentration
A: You should do so right after acceptance.

Q: How many credits are required to complete the degree?
A: 30 credits (10 courses) for the MPS and 15 Credits (5 courses) for the APC.

Q: How soon after I have submitted a completed application will I have a decision?
A: Assuming that your application is complete, you should get a decision no later than four (4) weeks after we receive your application. In some cases, depending on the volume of applications, there may be a slight delay.

Q: How do I know if my application is complete?
A: Please contact SCS Admissions at 202-687-8700 or via e-mail at scsenrollment@georgetown.edu.

Q: How is the Georgetown program different from other HR programs?
A: Our program is taught primarily by HR and diversity practitioners. In addition, students are given the opportunity to spend one week in a unique immersion program at The University of London, Queen Mary College, regardless of their concentration. In addition, students are required to take a course in ethics, and the majority of their studies will be in their area of concentration. We have an advisory board of practitioners and businesspeople who ensure that our program is up-to-date, interactive, and practical. The capstone project allows students to work on a project in concert with an advisory board member. We also place a high value on the advisory board members serving as mentors to students from their entry into the program.

Q: What about opportunities for research projects and communication vehicles?
A: Students and practitioners in the program will have the opportunity to participate in research projects and an interactive blog. The purpose of the research projects and interactive blog is to better understand the market as it relates specifically to human resources, diversity, and inclusion. Students can propose solutions that will help organizations develop and implement ideas, solve problems and case studies.  Additionally, they can use blogs to exchange ideas with others on relative topics.

Q: When are classes held?
A: Students will attend classes during evenings and on some weekends.

Q: What about housing information?
A: For information, see http://www.georgetown.edu/home/housing.html.
