ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Do you offer any scholarships for the program?
Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies offers programs at a reduced rate for working professionals and adult learners. The tuition as of June 2008 is $755 per credit hour, $2,265 per three credit course. We also offer a scholarship database available only to our enrolled students.

How many students are in the program?
At any given time there will be between 110 and 130 students.

How many students will be in each class?
We generally limit the classes to 20 students.

Do you offer weekend courses?
At this point in time we are not offering courses on the weekends. Our courses are currently offered in the evenings during the week but we are planning to offer weekend courses sometime in the near future.

Are there any online courses available?
Not at this time. Georgetown has a strong tradition of building community and we feel it’s important to offer that same community to our graduate students.

Do you offer internship placements?
We offer opportunities for internships but not direct placements. We have relationships with many organizations that can facilitate obtaining a job or internship. We also have a database for the students within our program to access for current internship and job opportunities within and outside the Washington DC area.

Can you do a combination of the two programs? How?
Students are permitted to take up to two courses in an MPS concentration outside of their declared concentration. The courses must be approved by the Associate Dean of the declared concentration and by the Associate Dean of the concentration the courses are offered in.

Do you have to go continuously?
It is not required that a student takes courses continually each semester. However, students need to consult their Program Director if they will not be enrolling in any given semester.

How many courses will be offered each semester? The same every semester?
The courses will vary depending on availability and demand. There will be a variety of courses offered to meet students' needs and interests. The core and capstone course will be offered each semester.

If I come to visit the campus, will I have the opportunity to meet with the staff or professors?
Please notify a member of the MPS Journalism staff if you are planning to visit the campus. This way a meeting can be arranged for you along with possible class visits. The staff must know in advance of the visit in order to accomodate these requests.

Does Georgetown offer student health insurance?
Georgetown University does offer health insurance to full time MPS students. Full time students are those taking 9 or more credit hours. Students are automatically charged the required health insurance fee on their tuition bill. Eligible students must accept or waive this insurance. Students may waive the University insurance online through Student Access + but they will have to show proof of private coverage. What is the difference between the MPS and the APC?
MPS stands for Master of Professional Studies. Students are awarded a Masters degree. APC stands for Advanced Professional Certificate. Students in the APC will be awarded a certificate. The application process for the APC is the same for the MPS. The MPS requires 30 credits for completion and the APC requires 15 credits for completion. The APC is designed for working professionals with prior experience looking to advance their position in the field within a shorter time period.

There is not a typical student profile for the MPS Journalism student. There is a great diversity in age, experience, background, career, and goals among the students.

Is financial aid available for the MPS program (international students)? How can I apply for financial aid?
Financial aid is available. Please visit the University’s Financial Aid office at http://www.georgetown.edu/home/student_finances.html. The staff of the MPS program does not handle any information regarding financial aid.

The fastest a student can complete the program is 4 semesters, including summer semesters.

Can you transfer credits from another program?
Up to six credits can be transferred. These credits are subject to the dean’s approval. We will need your transcript, the course descriptions and the syllabus.

Upon acceptance into the MPS program you will receive a letter regarding your NetID, orientation information, and registration information.

In order to pay for your courses, you will need to access your student account. You can do this by visiting the student access portal at http://limited.georgetown.edu/studentaccess/. With your NetId and password you are able to manage your classes as well as view and pay your tuition bill.

When am I required to complete or waive the journalism online tutorial?
TThe Program Director must receive notification of completion by the end of the first semester of enrollment but preferably before beginning classes. If the student is opting out of the tutorial, the justification must be placed in writing and approved by the Program Director.
