Robert Michael Murray
Robert Michael Murray is Vice President, Social Media for National Geographic in Washington, DC. In this position he is responsible for developing strategies that harness all existing and emerging social media platforms to effectively engage with National Geographic audiences and to transmit National Geographic-curated stories and the mission of the society across all digital mediums. For more than fifteen years Murray has been a senior digital adviser focused on strategic communications, emerging technologies, and live event production. His work has garnered national and international media coverage; outlets include the BBC, CNN, C-SPAN, The Washington Post, New York Times and others. Blending strategy, creative storytelling and emerging technologies Murray has worked with businesses, nonprofits, political campaigns and higher education institutions to successfully meet their institutional objectives, create brand loyalty, and build meaningful relationships with global audiences.
Most recently he served as the Director of Digital Media for Georgetown University and was responsible for institutional uses of digital media and emerging technologies for internal and external communications. While at Georgetown University, Murray's work included building breakthrough emerging technology and social infrastructure, and leading creative and technical production for live and VOD Web casts of high-profile events for such world leaders and politicians as then-Sen. Barack Obama, former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, then-Chairman of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, former first lady Laura Bush and Sen. John Kerry. In addition to defining the University's digital media and social media strategies, he was a key member of the institution's emergency response team responsible for online crisis communications efforts. Prior to joining Georgetown, Murray served in a number of communications and technology positions in higher education, political, nonprofit and commercial sectors. In 2000, he joined the staff of the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) as Webmaster for the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Murray was a leader in defining the convention's online brand and information architecture of the public website which welcomed more than 40 million Web visitors. In addition, working with the Convention's Office of Communications, he created an extranet website that delivered time-sensitive content to more than 15,000 members of the media covering the convention. Murray routinely lectures on topics ranging from: pervasive to persuasive technologies; the power and implications of social media; and the varied ways in which emerging technologies intersect with culture, society and human rights. He is also a senior associate with Georgetown University's Institute for International Law and Politics and has served as a teaching assistant for an interdisciplinary course at Georgetown exploring the tensions of the human rights culture.
