Mary Stewart

Turpin prepares students to deliver strategic, responsible messages that harness the power of research, insight and creativity. The first class she developed after joining the program was proven a vital addition to the curriculum; based on student impact, the course became a requirement. In addition to creating the program’s hallmark strategy course, she teaches the capstone class. She developed the capstone course model, in which students have generated pro bono consulting valued at more than $2.5 million. She also manages adjunct faculty recruitment and training, curriculum development, partnerships, and academic compliance. Prior to joining the public relations program in 2010, Turpin led the strategic communications efforts for a nonprofit health advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. She also co-founded the social media consultancy Bialick/Turpin & Associates, LLC. Turpin has worked on national client engagements in social marketing, consumer products, technology, and emergency and risk communication at public relations firms, including Ogilvy PR. She has earned multiple teaching awards since becoming an educator at the University of Maryland. Turpin earned a dual bachelor’s degree in English and Sociology at Georgetown University. She completed her master’s degree at the University of Maryland and is currently a doctoral degree candidate at Howard University. She continues to work as a communications and research consultant for both corporate and nonprofit clients.

At Environics, Walter leads the Sustainability & Clean Energy Practice working on issues including global warming, renewable energy, corporate social responsibility related to environmental and sustainability efforts, electric vehicle technology, and green product marketing. His client expertise includes: the Electric Drive Transportation Association; Biotechnology Industry Organization’s Industrial and Environmental Sector; DuPont Industrial Biosciences, Lockheed Martin’s Sustainability Program; Center for Clean Air Policy; the Water Design-Build Council, which promotes clean water infrastructure investment; the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour climate change project, and on an energy efficiency program for the Apartment and Building Owners Association of Greater Washington. He was part of the team that won a PRSA Silver Anvil award for work on WWF’s Earth Hour.

Photo of Jason Young Jason Young is Managing Director and General Manager of ASGK's Washington, D.C. office, the strategic communications firm founded by David Axelrod and headquartered in Chicago. Mr. Young specializes in helping clients navigate complex, high-stakes reputation and public policy challenges. He has represented companies such as Medco, Microsoft, Exelon, Cablevision, GlaxoSmithKline, Embarq, Eli Lilly and Company and the Global Business Coalition. He has also represented several trade associations, not-for-profit organizations and coalitions. He is especially interested in using integrated traditional and new media campaigns to drive better public policy outcomes. Before joining ASGK, Young served as Vice President, Public Affairs at The Glover Park Group, where he built GPG's successful health communications practice. He worked extensively on national health care reform, other federal legislation, crisis issues and regulatory matters for a broad array of clients. Before GPG, Young ran communications for the American Psychiatric Association, where he crystallized public repudiation of Tom Cruise, who had launched a high-profile crusade against mental health.
