Elevating Social Impact through Communications

Brands and organizations across sectors have an increasing role to play in addressing the world’s most pressing social issues—and to engage their stakeholders and supporters to join in their efforts. This has created the need for a new kind of communicator: one who is guided by ethics, who takes a strategic approach to using all of today’s tools and who is passionate about using his or her skills to have an impact on the world.

Georgetown University’s Center for Social Impact Communication (CSIC) is the nation’s leading educational resource on the role of communication in fostering social change. CSIC conducts research that sets the standards of practice and helps define the role of a responsible communicator within the industry, hosts unique engagement opportunities for students interested in social impact and infuses its applied research findings into curriculum for custom and executive education courses as well as special courses in the PRCC program.  

Launched in 2008, CSIC aims to elevate the discipline by pioneering industry standards in responsible communication practices and by educating and inspiring professionals of all levels to lead the way in creating positive social impact through their work. The Center’s work and philosophy is fully integrated into all four of Georgetown’s professional communications master’s degrees. 

CSIC Benefits

  • Informs the program’s curriculum and coursework in classes like Cause Consulting on emerging trends and insights.
  • Conducts and publishes industry-leading applied research on topics like strategic storytelling for nonprofits and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
  • Establishes student leadership opportunities in nonprofit and CSR topics via applied projects with real clients.
  • Offers selective research assistant opportunities with the Center and its partners.
  • Conducts programs, training and workshop sessions with social impact focused organizations across all sectors and sizes through custom and executive education offerings.

Get Involved with CSIC

Admitted PRCC students can get involved with CSIC in the following ways: 

  • Become a research assistant.
  • Serve as a social impact blog writer or editor.
  • Attend weekly office hours to get advice on careers in the CSR and nonprofit fields and/or class selection.
  • Attend panel discussions and networking opportunities with social impact professionals.
