Program Specific Questions

How is this program different from real estate/business degree programs?

MPS/RE program attempts to fill a significant gap in real estate professional education. It might best be described as a kind of specialized executive MBA program customized for the needs of the real estate industry. While the program omits some of the general management aspects of an MBA, it includes a great deal of real estate-specific regulatory and policy material unlikely ever to be offered in an MBA program, resembling some portions of the curriculum of public policy and law school programs. The MPS/RE program also includes elements that would typically be taught in architecture, design, planning, engineering, graduate international relations, and even (for biotech and biomedical real estate) medical schools. As appropriate, we thus draw upon the resources of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Law School, Walsh School of Foreign Service, School of Medicine, and other programs in the School of Continuing Studies. We also draw upon insights from other university real estate programs and professional and corporate programs of real estate instruction. MPS/RE places more emphasis upon the financial, international, public sector, infrastructure, and entrepreneurial aspects of real estate than most other graduate real estate programs.

Do I have to take the required courses in a particular sequence?

We recommend taking the foundational courses especially in our suggested sequence, but we do permit some deviation with some of the higher-level courses.

If I work or intern full-time, can I make the program fit into my schedule?

Yes. Our program was designed to support full-time internships or work. All of the classes meet in the evenings between 5:40 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.

How do the specialization tracks in the curriculum work?

Our four specialized tracks are Real Estate Development, Real Estate Finance, Construction Management, and International Real Estate. They differ in electives offered and content focus. Each student selects one of the tracks. Many courses count for more than one track.

Could you tell me about the faculty?

In this program, the faculty features expert practitioners and executives currently in the real estate industry. This professional knowledge makes the classroom a real-time laboratory dedicated to exploring the latest experiences in the industry from a local, national, and international prospective. This helps provide outstanding career-oriented curricula and practical theory experiences.

Could you tell me about the advisory board?

This is a privately selected group of executives from all sectors of real estate who have made an enthusiastic commitment to support the program. Its makeup is a multifaceted, multifunctional body of representatives from various fields of expertise, recognized and valued as distinguished contributors to the real estate industry.

How do I find out what my textbooks are?

Course syllabi are generally made available on Blackboard as soon as faculty complete them before classes begin. You can purchase your textbooks at the University bookstore. If you want to order your textbooks early, for example through an independent seller such as amazon.com, please contact your professor.

When do I have to pay my tuition?

Tuition is due after you have registered for courses. The tuition amount depends on the number of credits for which you are enrolled for the semester, and the deadline to pay depends on when you register for courses. You will pay tuition to the Office of Student Accounts at 202-687-7100 or online in Student Access +. Please consult with the Office of Student Accounts for tuition payment deadlines.

How do I get to the Georgetown University campus?

For directions to Georgetown University, please visit http://otm.georgetown.edu/index.cfm?fuse=directions.

Is there a grocery store close to campus?

There are several grocery stores close to the Georgetown campus, including a Safeway on Wisconsin Avenue and Wisemillers Grocery & Deli across from the Walsh building. A small, student-run minimarket called Vital Vittles located on campus in the Leavey Center carries groceries, snacks, sandwiches, and other convenience items.

What is it like to live in Washington, DC?

Washington is a major cosmopolitan city that is famous for its architecture, history, museums, restaurants, and events. Its cultural attractions include numerous monuments and landmarks, more than 90 museums and galleries, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Zoo, as well as a vibrant theatre and music scene. Many museums and events, including the 19 museums of the Smithsonian complex, music festivals on the Mall, and book readings, are free to the public. Home to various research institutions, nonprofit organizations, and Capitol Hill, it offers students access to a variety of academic events, including lectures, seminars, conferences, hearings, and symposia that are also open and often free to the public.

Will I need a car in Washington to get around the city?

A car is not a necessary means of transportation.  DC has a wealth of public transportation services that are the most efficient and quickest form of travel from one point in the city to another. You have several options for transportation in the metro DC area.

Georgetown University Transportation System (GUTS)

MPS/RE students may use the University-operated, free shuttle buses that run regularly between the University and the Red Line (Dupont Circle), the Orange and Blue Lines (Rosslyn), the Georgetown Law Center (Downtown D.C./Capitol Hill). and Wisconsin Ave, NW.

In addition, students may take the bus or metro rail. The WMATA is a safe, accessible, clean, and reliable transportation system, operating in DC, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Metro has five lines: the Blue, Orange, Red, Green, and Yellow. The nearest Metro stops to Georgetown University are in Rosslyn (Blue and Orange lines), Foggy Bottom (Blue and Orange lines), and Dupont Circle (Red line).

Bus routes cover most of the city; the G-2 bus stops directly outside the main gates of the campus, traveling to and from the Metro stop at Dupont Circle (Red line).

While there is no special deadline for international students to apply to the MPS/RE Program, students who will need to apply for a visa through Georgetown University have to send original financial documentation in addition to the immigration questionnaire.

Do I need to send proof of English proficiency?

All applicants whose native language is not English or who have not attended an English-speaking undergraduate institution must forward results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language™ (TOEFL) for the purpose of verifying English-language ability. A TOEFL score of 600 or above on the written or at least 250 on the computer-based is required.

I have not yet taken the TOEFL. Can I substitute another English proficiency test?

No. For the purpose of verifying English-language ability, you must take and forward the results of the TOEFL to Georgetown University.
