Georgetown University and the Tiger Woods Foundation Partner on new externship course
The Georgetown University Sports Industry Management (GUSIM) graduate program and the Tiger Woods Foundation (TWF) have partnered to support a new education initiative this month.
The GU SIM 840 TWF Externship course is designed to blend the fundamentals and culture of the Tiger Woods Foundation—including the Tiger Woods Learning Center and the AT&T National PGA TOUR event, July 2-5—with the academic and personal development initiatives of Georgetown University and the Sports Industry Management curriculum.
“We are excited to be partnering with Georgetown University to provide their students with a real world perspective on the hard work and dedication it takes to plan and run a PGA TOUR golf event,” Greg McLaughlin, president and CEO of the Tiger Woods Foundation said.
Among the goals and learning objectives of this unique experience is to gain a real-time competitive insight into the global initiatives of an international event and the associated social responsibility aspects.
|
| The course will expose the students to the intricacies of managing and running a major sporting event on a daily basis. Students will gain an understanding of the requirements and complexities involved in planning, managing, and executing a PGA TOUR event. Featured topics include sales and marketing, ticketing and admissions, operations, communications, tournament services, staff management, and the implementation of action plans.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our inaugural class of graduate students to be associated with a special organization like the Tiger Woods Foundation,” said Matt Winkler, associate dean of the Sports Industry Management program. “A partnership like this builds on Georgetown’s commitment to training new leaders and is a natural extension of our program’s mission to help students gain access to key relationships and field experiences.”
Taking place at the TWF event headquarters at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland leading up to the tournament, this program will also include exposure to the spirit of an annual event and a major foundation that make sports unique and the arenas of strategy and competition that take place on an international scale. Lead faculty for the course are McLaughlin; Michelle Bemis, vice president, Events & Business Development, Tiger Woods Foundation; and Daniel Callahan, championship director, AT&T National/Tiger Woods Foundation.
Students will have a variety of duties and responsibilities within their assigned area and will also develop a working project deliverable that will serve as the focus of their experience. The class will pay particular attention to professional development and will meet on a weekly basis with senior level executives within the TWF organization. Each of the students will do real-time research and maintain a blog which will serve as a valuable resource and provide guidance to future TWF event.
The class will host several guest lecturers from the organization: Emily Taylor, vice president, Communications & Marketing; Stacy Stark, director, Tournament Services; Arthur Brown, director, Operations/Tournament Director, CWC; John Coolbaugh, operations manager; Andy Harmatys, operations manager; Lindsey Wagner, tournament services manager; Jessica Edwards, event manager; Rachel Rees, communications manager; Dan Scali, sales & business development coordinator; Alysia Hendricks, ticketing coordinator; and Gina Ekmekjian, tournament coordinator.

The Tiger Woods Foundation is an organization dedicated to empowering young people to reach their maximum potential. Since its inception in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his father Earl, the Tiger Woods Foundation has reached an estimated 10 million young people through character development, career exploration, scholarships and grant making programs. Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation all share a similar mission of empowering young people to dream big and to set specific goals to achieve their dreams.
Specific programs of the Foundation include the Tiger Woods Learning Center—a youth-education facility and curriculum based in Anaheim, California—and Tiger’s Action Plan, a nationwide character development program based on Earl D. Woods’ book entitled Start Something. Tiger’s Action Plan is a free program for youth 8–17 that addresses three priorities: character education, volunteer service, and career exploration.
