Michael Stevens serves on the Urban & Regional Planning program faculty and is the president of the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District (BID).
Stevens is president of the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District (BID), the largest and most rapidly developing mixed-use, mixed-income and transit-oriented urban neighborhood in the Nation’s Capital. Stevens is a highly accomplished urban planning professional who has practiced economic development, downtown development and neighborhood development for the majority of his 37-year career. His career has included leadership positions at public sector planning agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private consulting firms.
From 2000-2006 he served as founding president & CEO of the Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership and built that public-private partnership from a start-up to an effective partner to the public sector, whose mission is to market economic development initiatives in Washington, D.C. to national and international organizations and investors. Stevens played a key role in coordinating the Center City Action Agenda, a strategic plan and framework to guide development and public investment in the center city neighborhoods of Washington, DC.
Stevens has participated in numerous downtown redevelopment efforts for cities such as Wichita, KS; Lubbock, TX; Dallas, TX; Nashville, TN; Memphis, TN; Jackson, MS; Washington, DC; and San Antonio, TX. He has also served on planning advisory panels for the Urban Land Institute and the International Downtown Association.
He holds a Master of Urban Planning and Design from Virginia Tech and a B.A. in Urban Sociology from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.
