Course Description:
The Certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Communication offered by the Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) at Georgetown University prepares security professionals to formulate and execute the best possible response to a wide range of emergencies and disasters—from terrorist threats to extreme weather events.  The program is designed to instruct professionals in the public and private sectors in the communication and operational factors of emergency preparedness and crisis management. 

Course Objectives:
The certificate program consists of seven courses that cover:

  • Preparedness planning
  • Risk assessment and mitigation
  • Human, technological, and logistical factors of crisis management
  • Legal and jurisdictional issues of crisis events
  • National and international policy issues and threats
  • System-wide continuity/ emergency and communications management planning

Program Structure:
Participants must complete six required courses and any one elective over a two-year period.  There is no prescribed sequence of courses except the Capstone Course in Emergency Preparedness should be completed towards the end of the program. 

Registration:

This certificate is an open enrollment program. You may register for individual courses by clicking on the course links below. No application is required.  See below for program prerequisites.

Prerequisites:
A bachelor's degree and TOEFL examination for non-native speakers of English.

Continuing Education Units:
The course comprises 84 contact hours or 8.4 CEUs.  The course is transcripted to provide official documentation from Georgetown University. 

Professional Certification: 
Completion of the program assists certificate holders towards obtaining the Certified Emergency Managers (CEM) credential. Individuals wishing to become CEM’s must possess a bachelor’s degree, have three years’ experience in the field, and sit for an exam administered by the International Association of Emergency Managers.  The CEM credential is internationally recognized.

Tuition:
The tuition for the certificate program, including all seven courses, is $4,950.00 for each participant.  Participants register and pay for courses on a course-by-course basis.  Once a participant has completed the six required courses and one elective course, a certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Communication from Georgetown University will be granted.
