Developing leadership skills is a complex path.  Leaders may come into their roles at different career stages.  Whether chosen for field-specific skills, growth potential, or demonstrated performance, taking on a new role can challenge even the seasoned professional.  How will an expanded role within an organization reshape an individual's identity?  How will he or she communicate consistently with a variety of people, groups, and stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and agendas?

The Georgetown University Center for Continuing and Professional Education understands that leadership is comprised of two critical ingredients: vision and execution.  While many managers possess the technical competency to manage a department, product, or service line, vision and execution are the keys to organizational success. To craft a vision and implement a strategy, leaders must continually develop three competencies:

Know Yourself: Managers must actively reflect on their professional experiences while simultaneously challenging themselves to acquire and apply new leadership skills.  In the Executive Leadership program, participants go beyond the step of understanding their strengths and weaknesses to develop specific courses of action to leverage strengths and mitigate weaknesses.

Know People: Leadership entails motivating an organization toward a shared goal. Working with people with different mindsets and agendas is challenging.  The ability to listen and communicate has never been more relevant.

Know the Environment: A leader must understand the playing field before he or she begins to shape it. Assessing the organizational landscape is just as important as knowing the wider market.  Leaders must engage in alliances, partnerships, and coalition-building with a variety of stakeholders to achieve organizational success.

Overview:
By growing these three core competencies, program participants develop a leadership platform and become reflective practitioners, useful across industry and sectors.  The Executive Leadership program begins with the premise that, first and foremost, a team and leader need a purpose.  Course one focuses on idea generation and crafting an appropriate strategy.  Subsequent courses support leadership development around implementation of the strategy.  Through the Georgetown University Certificate in Government Executive Leadership Program, students will consider the importance of messaging to build and manage professional relationships.

The Georgetown program is characterized by a commitment to self-reflection by participants. Through real-world case studies explored in courses together with time for self-evaluation, participants are able to uncover their leadership commitments.

Program participants will further specialize along industry lines.  Strategy is supported by the financial foundations course which allows growing leaders opportunities to work with specialists in the industry to examine best practices and specific financial tools.  This additional sector-specific financial literacy supports informed planning and facilitates dialogue among peers.
