Fundamentals of Law: The American Legal System

This program combines theoretical and hands-on clinical explorations of domestic and international justice systems with the goal of better understanding how courts and the legal system impact the resolution of conflict.

After completing this program, you will be more prepared for ethical and responsible citizenship in the field of law; connected with others of different backgrounds and philosophies in the government, business and nonprofit sectors; and energized about the democratic system. The program ends with a trial simulation taking students through a trial where they will assume the role of an attorney.

Hands-on Experience*

  • Participate in courtroom observations.
  • Observe a Georgetown Street Law Clinic Session.
  • Visit corporations, government agencies, Capitol Hill offices as well as legal reform organizations including the Republican National Committee, the Democratic National Committee, the Federal Election Commission, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Newseum.
  • Listen to guest speakers, including prominent members of the Georgetown faculty.
  • Participate in a simulated trial activity, where students will:
    • Assume the role of an attorney
    • Construct opening statements and closing arguments
    • Analyze and execute direct and cross-examinations
    • Learn the procedures to handle and enter evidence
    • Prepare for an expert witness

Monday, July 16*

8:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m.
Students can use this time period to take a second class from Summer College and earn an additional three credits.
1:00 2:00 p.m.
Lecture Topic: Overview of the U.S. Court System
Georgetown Law Center Faculty Member
2:00 2:30 p.m.
Students will break into small groups for exercises in preparation for next day's field trip to the Washington, DC Superior Court
8:00 10:00 p.m.
Summer Hoya Evening Program: Ice Cream Social
