Fundamentals of American Government

This program is now only accepting applications for Summer 2012 from students who do not require on-campus housing.

This program provides an overview of American government structure with a focus on local, state, and national government.  Students will gain a solid foundation in an array of topics including the U.S. Constitution, federalism, the presidency, political parties, elections, and public opinion.  Reading, writing, and critical thinking skills will improve as students consider the role of citizens in an American democracy.

  • Stage a presidential debate
  • Watch committee hearings on Capitol Hill
  • Examine primary source materials
  • Visit the Federal Election Commission, the U.S. House of Representatives, the National Archives, and the Newseum
  • Engage with guest speakers, including members of the Georgetown faculty

Lecture Topic: The Three Branches of Government
Congressional guest speaker 
9:15 10:00 a.m.
Activity: Drafting a Letter to your Political Representative 
1:00 5:00 p.m.
Students can use this time period to take a second class from Summer College and earn an additional three credits.
