Ideal for Professionals and business school applicants seeking to build a foundation of knowledge in finance and accounting, refresh or update their finance and budgeting skills, or transition into senior management or financial management roles.
Program Format Courses typically meet on Friday evenings and Saturdays at our downtown Washington, D.C. campus. Occasionally, courses may meet on weekdays during the day or evening.
Program Length Six courses over one semester. Students are not required to enroll continuously and have up to two years to complete the program.
Program Cost Tuition is $895.00 per course. Total program tuition for all six courses is $5,370.00. Most course materials are included.

Start Date Budget & Finance courses are open enrollment and offered throughout the year, though some courses may be available in the spring or fall semester only. Courses may be taken in any order, however, students are encouraged to complete Introduction to Budgeting first. Please see course schedule below for the next start date.

Program Overview

The Certificate in Budget and Finance provides managers and analysts with the fundamentals of budgeting and financial management. Program participants will develop skills in accounting, operational and capital budgeting, and internal financial management. Taught by academics and experienced practitioners, participants will learn the fundamentals of finance, cost analysis, internal controls, and budgeting.

Participants will be able to apply new cost management, budget analysis, and risk assessment skills in the workplace. Prospective students interested in corporate finance and financial markets may wish to consider the Certificate in Corporate Finance program.

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret financial information
  • Apply ratio and trend analysis to financial statements
  • Assess the costs and benefits of business decisions
  • Develop operational budgets and apply cost management techniques
  • Apply risk and return considerations in capital budgeting
  • Understand the federal budgeting process
  • Communicate operational and financial strategies to non-financial stakeholders

Certificate Requirements

To receive the Certificate in Budget & Finance from Georgetown University, students must successfully complete four (4) required courses and two (2) elective courses for a total of 10.80 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), which is equivalent to 108.0 contact hours. All six courses must be completed within a two-year period.

Program Prerequisites

Program participants must have a bachelor's degree or the equivalent.

International Students

Georgetown University cannot sponsor student visas for non-credit professional certificate programs, however, international students who enter the U.S. on a valid visa are eligible to enroll in courses. A TOEFL examination for non-native speakers of English is not required but students are expected to read, write and comprehend English at the graduate level to fully participate in and gain from the program.
