Program Description

Georgetown’s Paralegal Evening program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to be highly competitive in the legal industry. Students complete a rigorous course of study over one year (three academic semesters) by taking courses part-time in the evening or weekends. Taught by leading academics and experienced practitioners, students develop a strong legal foundation, sharpen their technical skills, and gain practical, hands-on experience.

Graduates of the program continue on to pursue successful careers as paralegals or litigation support and e-discovery professionals in law firms, corporations, nonprofits, government agencies, or private equity firms. Many graduates also use the program as a stepping-stone to law school.

Designed for:

  • Legal professionals seeking a credential for career advancement
  • Working professionals seeking a career change to the legal field or related industries
  • Recent college graduates seeking a path to a legal career
  • Individuals seeking a stepping stone to law school

Certificate Requirements

To earn the Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Georgetown University, students in the General Legal track must successfully complete 14 courses, while students in the Litigation Technology/Legal Project Management track must successfully complete 13 courses. Please see the Georgetown Paralegal Curriculum Brief below for specific program and grade requirements.

Program Curriculum

Over the duration of one year, students complete 13–14 courses, based on their selected track. In the first semester, students learn the fundamentals of law. After completing the first semester, students can choose from two curriculum tracks to pursue their studies in for the remainder of the program:

  1. General Legal Track
  2. Litigation Technology/Legal Project Management Track

Each track is described in the Program Format section including minimum passing requirements for selected courses. Course descriptions are available by clicking the course links below.

Internships

In addition to enrolling in required and elective courses, students in their third semester of the Paralegal Studies Evening program may be eligible for an internship. Internships are an effective means to gain real-world work experience in a practice area, professional legal environment, or corporate setting. Internships are typically four to five weeks in duration and most are unpaid. All internships comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Program Prerequisites

Applicants to the program must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution prior to the start of the program. Additionally, because program coursework is reading- and writing-intensive, applicants must have superlative command of written and spoken English. All applicants (regardless of citizenship) whose first language is not English are required to complete the TOEFL or the IELTS. For the TOEFL, Georgetown requires minimum scores of 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), or 90–100 (iBT); for the IELTS, Georgetown requires  a score of 7.5 or higher. No exceptions to these prerequisites are permitted.

Evening Program Schedule

The part-time Evening Program consists of three 15-week semesters. Classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternate Wednesdays from 6:15 p.m. until 9:50 p.m. Students can begin their first semester in either the fall (the week after Labor Day) or spring (the second week in January). Each semester, students take four regular courses and one special session. Regular courses meet two evenings a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for approximately three hours each night. Special sessions are held on four Wednesday evenings throughout the semester for three hours per night.

Library Resources & Research Materials

Students in the Paralegal Studies Program have access to Georgetown University library resources, including the Georgetown University Law Center library. Georgetown University's library resources include:

  • 500 databases
  • 27,000 print journals
  • 115,000 e-journals
  • 2.4 million books
  • 20,000 DVDs and videos

Program Tuition

Tuition for the Certificate in Paralegal Studies Evening Program is $9,200, excluding books and materials. Books and materials are estimated to cost between $750 and $1,000. Tuition is paid per semester. Withdrawals and refunds are subject to the Paralegal Studies Program Withdrawal and Refund Policy

Tuition Payment Considerations

While non-credit professional certificate programs do not qualify for federal financial aid, prospective students should consider the following for tuition payment:

  • Seek employer funding or reimbursement
  • Enroll in Georgetown’s interest-free payment plan
  • Use Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits/GI Bill
  • Apply for a private education loan
  • Register for individual courses over multiple semesters

Admissions and Applications

Admission to the Paralegal Studies Evening Program is highly selective. Applicants must demonstrate that they have: (1) the ability to complete a rigorous academic program and; (2) the personal and professional maturity to succeed in the highly competitive legal field.
