Dialogue about our culture is essential to furthering our understanding of ourselves and our society. Against the rich cultural backdrop of Washington and informed by Georgetown University’s deep liberal arts tradition, journalism students examine the media’s role in our ongoing public cultural conversation. The history and trends of criticism and cultural reporting are studied, as well as the works of contemporary arbiters from Updike and Sontag to Crouch and Gitlin. Journalism s tudents learn to write criticism that is both accessible and intellectually rigorous as they examine the intersection of art and politics, multiculturalism, and modernism.
The Advanced Professional Certificate
Well-established professionals who wish to develop greater expertise in a specific area and take advantage of Georgetown University’s outstanding course offerings may elect to pursue the Advanced Profession Certificate (APC) instead of the full master’s degree. This five course, 15-credit option is available with the associate dean’s approval for the journalism concentration. The same acceptance standards apply as for the full master’s program. Students may choose to complete an additional 15 credits once the APC is complete in order to obtain a full master’s degree.
