Student Secures Internship Using School's New Georgetown Career Access Network
Dec. 17, 2010
Students now have access to an exclusive tool that provides industry contacts and networking opportunities.
The Georgetown Career Access Network (GCAN) is a new online career management system now available to students enrolled in the School of Continuing Studies' (SCS) degree programs as well as the Paralegal Studies Certificate Program. This exclusive tool provides students and alumni with access to industry contacts generated by faculty, staff and alumni. As a comprehensive resource, GCAN also offers resume and interview tools, professional development workshops, and links to other Georgetown career resources. Current SCS students should contact your Program Manager to gain access to this site.
The User Experience As a comprehensive resource, GCAN offers resume building and interview tools, professional development workshops, and links to other Georgetown career resources as well as the chance to connect with the SCS community globally through professional development opportunities. GCAN serves the SCS student community by providing a one stop professional development resource.
"I would not have been able to intern for the Redskins if it weren't for GCAN. It is such a vital tool to any student searching for an internship. " said Angela Alfano, a student in the Master's Program in Sports Industry Management. "I know when I was first starting my internship hunt, I felt slightly overwhelmed. GCAN definitely helped me narrow my search. It gave me the best internship opportunities in the region on one site and it was all at my fingertips."
The Master's Programs in Sports Industry Management, Public Relations, and Real Estate have already started posting job and internship opportunities to the database. In the coming weeks, the other SCS programs can expect to be introduced to GCAN as well. In addition, SCS Semester in Washington Program students have been successfully using GCAN since 2009.
The Importance of GCAN Today In today's economic times, taking advantage of professional development resources and access to job opportunities is essential to success.
This tool is just one more benefit to studying at SCS. GCAN provides myriad resources for students who are preparing for and conducting a job search, while simultaneously building their professional network which will serve them for years to come.
"The School is committed to serving the long-term career development needs of both students and alumni," said Patrick Brennan, Assistant Dean of Students and Alumni. "Many students come to SCS to fulfill a longtime educational goal, to advance their career, or to take their career in a new direction. GCAN is able to support these goals."
