On Monday, January 9, the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) hosted 150 new students for the Spring New Student Welcome at the historic Riggs Library in Healy Hall. Robert L. Manuel, Ph.D., associate provost and dean of the School of Continuing Studies, welcomed the new SCS students along with Father Richard Curry, S.J., who spoke about Georgetown's Jesuit heritage. As one student remarked on the event, "Father Curry's speech was interesting and inspiring. It made me feel proud to become part of such a classic, historic, and significant institution. It also feels good to be part of a faith filled community that expects its students to use their gifts to make the world a better place."
Members from the SCS community participated to ensure the event was a successful, fun and informative evening for the new students. Faculty and staff were on hand to answer questions as well as provide campus resources during the information fair and reception. Later, returning students and alumni shared their educational experiences with new students during the academic program break-out sessions. Sarah Marilyn, a new student in the master's Public Relations & Corporate Communications program, reflected on her experience in the academic session. "[This event] challenged me to look at classes differently and select courses that will expand on my current skills while allowing me to develop new skills in other areas," she said.
The evening concluded with students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered together to watch the live broadcast of the Georgetown men's basketball game versus Cincinnati – demonstrating and sharing in the school spirit of Georgetown University.
