SCS 2021 Commencement Announcement

Dear SCS Community:

Earlier today, we learned from President John J. DeGioia that the 2021 Commencement activities will be held virtually. We are planning robust virtual ceremonies for Tropaia and Commencement, which will include addresses to the graduating class and the reading of names.

2021 SCS Virtual Commencement Schedule

  • SCS Tropaia Ceremony: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. ET
  • Doctoral Hooding Ceremony: Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. ET
  • Georgetown University Degree Conferral Ceremony: Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. ET
  • SCS Ceremony: Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. ET

For the latest updates, please be sure to check the SCS Commencement website. Georgetown also has list of university-wide Commencement events.

In accordance with the latest state and local guidelines, we are also working closely with the University in order to develop small-scale, in-person opportunities on campus; these will be open to graduating students only. Plans are still in development and are contingent on public health conditions and review by the D.C. Government. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

We realize this is still a bittersweet announcement for many of us—for you as our outstanding group of graduates, for your family and friends, as well as for faculty and staff. As Dean, I realize how Commencement is truly the highlight of the academic year: a special time when our community comes together to celebrate your great accomplishments. I also know how meaningful it is to share this experience with your family and friends, who have supported you throughout your academic careers and professional endeavors. Looking ahead to next year, we would like to invite the members of the Class of 2021, as well as the Class of 2020, to return for in-person celebrations in 2022; more details will also be forthcoming.

Although these circumstances are not what we have traditionally envisioned for Commencement, we at SCS are so proud of all you have accomplished—you have persevered in achieving your degree at an incredibly challenging time. Our dedicated team of SCS administrators and faculty is working hard to develop creative ways not only to celebrate your successes, but also to maintain the vital community experience of Commencement.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. We will share more information as plans take shape. Please do not hesitate to reach out to or to your program advisors with any questions or concerns.

My very best,

Kelly J. Otter, PhD
Dean, School of Continuing Studies
