John Gilroy
John Gilroy has been a member of the Washington D.C. technology community for over twenty years. He was the creator of “The Computer Guys” on National Public Radio (WAMU 88.5 FM) in 1991. The monthly gabfest has run continuously for 23 years and garnered an award from the IEEE for excellence in broadcasting. Answering audience questions on the radio resulted in the “Ask the Computer Guy” column in the Washington Post that ran every Sunday for ten years, 523 columns. Additionally, John has written 45 magazine articles. In 2007 he began weekly interviews on Federal News Radio called “Federal Tech Talk with John Gilroy.” His 383 interviews provides the basis for his 218 blog posts. In 2009 he created a successful breakfast club of previous radio guests called The Technology Leadership Roundtable. An additional breakfast club began in October of 2014. It is sponsored by Tableau Software and has a focus on big data visualization for federal information technology professionals. In 2013 he drove a sales increase of 250% for the ARMATURE Corporation. In 2014 he used social media marketing to a 726% increase in website visits for Lectromec and a buyout offer from a Fortune 500 company. Currently, he is leading the social media marketing team at BLT Systems Integrators in Chantilly, Virginia. John also works as a social media consultant for two other technology companies where he provides strategic guidance in structuring website design, landing pages, LinkedIn profiles, as well as content distribution tactics. In 2011 he began teaching a course in social media marketing at Georgetown University; in March of 2014, John won the Tropaia Award for outstanding faculty. In addition to his classroom work, John conducts monthly corporate training for billion dollar companies on how to leverage social media to generate revenue. John has a Master’s degree from Indiana University, has received over 211 invitations to speak in the past ten years, most recently ASAE and the Washington Networking Group. He has appeared on television 167 times, including Dateline NBC, C-SPAN, and a two year stint with his weekly television program called “Ask The Computer Guy.” His last television appearance was in October of 2014 on local CBS affiliate WUSA9 where he and another adjunct faculty member discussed teaching ethics in the Technology Management program at Georgetown University. On a personal note, John has traveled over 7,000 miles overland in Latin America, has studied in a graduate program in Guatemala and resided in Brazil for a year while attending the University of Sao Paulo. John has been married for 31 years with three grown children. In June of 2014 he was one of the 631 athletes who finished in the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim.
