Study Urban Planning in the Nation's Capital

Georgetown University’s Master of Professional Studies in Urban & Regional Planning (URP) trains visionary leaders to create livable, meaningful, and sustainable neighborhoods, cities, and regions. Housed in a state-of-the-art campus in downtown Washington, D.C., the program engages leading practitioners to study and advance the practices of responsible urban development as a dedicated profession in cities around the world.

Students learn how to:

  • Catalyze targeted urban investment
  • Advance long-term community sustainability and resilience
  • Enable housing choices in communities
  • Instill community identity through place-making
  • Engage stakeholders in a transparent and ethical manner

Features of the program:

  • An applied curriculum that spans economic development, land use, urban design, housing, culture, urban sustainability, and resilience
  • Exposure to professional practices associated with public finance, regulations, and urban development strategies
  • Professional development with leading practitioners from local, regional, and international organizations


Urban planners work in traditional and nontraditional roles, including:

  • Local, state, and federal government planning, policymaking, and enforcement
  • For-profit and non-profit real estate and infrastructure development
  • Land use, infrastructure, and environmental consulting
  • Community development, communications, and advocacy

The master's in Urban & Regional Planning program is a member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP). The program has been developed on the basis of the curricular standards established by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) in anticipation of the program seeking PAB accreditation.
