Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

A Holistic Approach to a Master's Degree

Georgetown’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program provides students with a well-rounded education that helps them achieve intellectual advancement, enhanced critical thinking abilities, and a greater cultural understanding.

Featuring an interdisciplinary, values-oriented curriculum, the program places a strong emphasis on educating the whole person, fostering inquiry, intellect, and curiosity. Students engage with classmates from around the world while exploring a broad range of subjects, including art, literature, religion, history, the humanities, politics, and international affairs.

Working closely with an advisor, students design their own program, tailoring their studies to align with their interests, aspirations, and career goals.

Students have the option to pursue a 30-credit degree plan, which includes a 3-credit thesis, or a 36-credit degree plan, which does not involve a thesis.
