What is an interesting trend emerging in your field?
The world’s limited oil supply, compounded by China’s and other developing countries’ increased demand for oil, will nudge America to build more compact and less auto dependent cities. This will require planners to consider how to retrofit cities and suburbs that rely on automobiles as the primary source of mobility. Planners and community leaders will need to lead the way and push transit-oriented development and compact development across the nation. As an aspiring planner, I intend to promote compact development, as it is critical to improving human health, maintaining valuable green space, and decreasing our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels.
What has been your most unique learning experience?
My most unique learning experience has been from exploring and living in international communities. My passion to promote a safe, sustainable, and peaceful world has been shaped by seeing the positive and negative impacts of government. Furthermore, traveling and reading has helped me better understand the interconnectedness of developing and industrialized nations. Specifically, understanding the challenges incurred by other nations has led me to be more considerate of my actions and allocation of resources.
