Business Reporting

Overview: The course is designed to give students exposure to coverage of business news as well as an understanding of the role business reporting has in society. Business journalism is the fastest-growing segment of media, with CNBC, Bloomberg News, Reuters and Fox Business all expanding and new specialty publications proliferating as consumers demand a better understanding of markets and economies and how they affect their lives. The class will feature frequent guest speakers from business and government as well as veteran reporters and editors.

Objectives: To provide students with the skills and understanding of business reporting, which requires a working knowledge of the interactions of public and private companies, government, lobbying and workforce issues.

At the end of the course students will be:

·      Active consumers of business journalism
·      Capable practitioners of business reporting
·      Equipped to understand the role of reporting on finance, money and economics in society
·      Able to read and understand a corporate balance sheet, evaluate a press release, and find information on public and private companies as well as government agencies, housing records and political-campaign data.
