How to Apply

Georgetown has additional requirements for some international applicants.

  • Application requirements found on the How to Apply page.
  • Transcripts: Official SpanTran (TEC), WES, or ECE course-by-course evaluation for all institutions attended outside of the U.S.
  • English Language Proficiency Exams for non-native English speakers (one of the following):
    • TOEFL: Recommended score of 100 (original TOEFL iBT score scale) or 5 (new TOEFL iBT score scale beginning January 21, 2026).
      • TOEFL iBT MyBest™ scores are accepted for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs.

    • IELTS: Recommended score of 7.0

Please Note: If you meet any of the following criteria, you are not required to submit a TOEFL/IELTS score:

  • You have a degree conferred from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.
  • Your native language is English.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have completed the degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree to be admitted to a master's program.

For applicants who have completed coursework or who hold a degree from a higher education institution outside the U.S:

  • In order to ensure that U.S. accreditation standards, degree, course, and credit equivalencies are met, transcripts from higher education institutions outside the U.S. must be evaluated on a course-by-course basis by SpanTran (TEC), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), or World Education Services (WES). When ordering the report, please indicate scsadmissions@georgetown.edu as the intended recipient of the course-by-course evaluation.
  • The Office of Admissions can request a transcript from a study abroad program or an official ECE/SpanTran/TEC/WES evaluation if deemed necessary during the review of an admissions application. In certain cases, students who have participated in a formal study abroad program through their home institution may not need to submit a separate transcript from their visiting school. Please contact the Office of Admissions for more information regarding your particular circumstances.
  • The course-by-course ECE, SpanTran/TEC, or WES evaluation process can be lengthy; therefore, we encourage applicants to begin this process well in advance of the application deadline to ensure timely receipt and review by the Office of Admissions. Applicants are encouraged to be proactive in working with admissions advisors to ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted on time.

In order to succeed academically at Georgetown, you must be able to excel in courses that are reading- and writing-intensive. We require applicants whose native language is not English to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency in one of the following exams or programs:

English is considered your native language if it is the only official language of your home country and the primary language spoken in your home. If English is not your native language, evidence of proficiency in its use will be considered in the review of your application for admission, along with your academic and professional credentials. Additionally, the Office of Admissions can waive the English language proficiency requirement if the applicant has graduated from an accredited English-speaking institution with an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Immigration Information for Students Without U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residence

All students who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. Permanent Residents, who intend to enroll and study in F-1 or J-1 status at Georgetown must indicate their requested status on the Enrollment Agreement Form.

Admitted international students who need a Form I-20 (F-1) or Form DS-2019 (J-1) immigration document from Georgetown must apply for the immigration document by following the instructions at Georgetown’s Admitted F-1 and J-1 Students page. The complete process of obtaining the Georgetown Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 and applying for the F-1 or J-1 visa takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks. Students are strongly encouraged to begin the Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 application at the earliest opportunity, in mid-March for students admitted for the Summer/Fall semester and mid-October for students admitted for the Spring semester.
