A Curriculum Designed for Future Information Technology Leaders
The Master’s in Information Technology Management program from Georgetown University is designed with flexibility for adult learners, offering both online and on-campus formats as well as full- and part-time schedules. Earn a specialized degree by choosing electives from one of four focus areas or take courses from each focus to graduate with a generalized degree. Â
Georgetown’s program explores topics at the forefront of technology management, including security, data governance, and cloud computing. You’ll complete a hands-on Capstone for career-ready skills and graduate in as little as 15 months, prepared to advance in your IT career.
Focus Areas
The IT Management program requires four elective courses (12 credits). Students can choose to take four courses across the four areas of focus (generalist profile) or take all four elective courses in one area of focus (specialization profile).
- Project Management: Develop the strategies you need to effectively iterate towards better end products and services. Students who take all four elective courses in this focus area will also earn the Graduate Certificate in Lean & Agile Practices.
- Business Intelligence: Harness and integrate data analytics to support decision-making and competitive intelligence. Students who take all four elective courses in this focus area will also earn the Graduate Certificate in Competitive Business Intelligence.
- Cybersecurity: Master the specialized skills needed to prevent and mitigate cyber risks through an accelerated, customizable curriculum. Students who take all four elective courses in this focus area will also earn the Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Risk Management.
- AI & Digital Technology: Drive enterprise modernization by leveraging AI, cloud computing, and mobile technologies, with a focus on strategic innovation, governance frameworks, and user-centered digital solutions.
Program Formats
The Master's in Information Technology Management is available in both an online format and an on-campus format. You can opt to take classes online, on-campus, or through a combination of both.
- On-Campus Format: In the on-campus format, classes are held at the same times every week at our downtown D.C. campus.
- Online Format: The online master’s has the same curriculum as the on-campus format and offers access to all of the same University resources. In this format, you’ll be able to watch lectures and complete assignments on your own schedule.
Full-Time v. Part-Time Status
You’ll have the flexibility to earn your degree at a pace that suits your schedule:
- Full-time students typically take 9 credits (3 courses) during the fall and spring semesters.Â
- Part-time students typically take 3 to 6 credits (1 to 2 courses) during the fall and spring semesters.
- Although students are not required to take credits during the summer semester, they have the option of registering for one or more courses in order to continue their progress year-round.
To earn a Master’s in IT Management, you must successfully complete 10 courses (30 credits total), including those listed below. Please see the Course Schedule below to learn which classes are available during the current and upcoming semesters.

Students can choose to take four courses (12 credits) across the areas of focus (generalist profile) or take all four elective courses in one area of focus (specialization profile). If students decide to specialize in project management, business intelligence, or cybersecurity, they will be eligible to receive a graduate certificate upon completion of the required coursework (See Appendix B: Required Courses for Each Graduate Certificate). The graduate certificate will then be notated on the student’s transcript.

Agile Frameworks for Lean Ent
Agile organizations quickly sense and adapt to external and internal changes to deliver relevant results in a productive and cost-effective manner. This course explores merging life cycle approaches, which lead to greater organizational agility, and provides an in-depth examination and evaluation of Lean-Agile principles and values and the drivers behind becoming a more agile organization. Students learn how organizations can achieve agility at scale by funding ecosystems of teams that deliver large initiatives, allowing decentralized financial decision making within the portfolio, and continuously prioritizing their backlog of activities within each agile project. Learning objectives for this course include the ability to achieve true end-to-end business agility by utilizing industry standard agile frameworks (such as Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe); establishing the strategic themes that guide an organization's strategy and investments; determining and funding the relevant value streams; defining and prioritizing cross-cutting portfolio backlog epics; and monitoring the performance of the portfolios using applicable Lean portfolio, program, and team metrics. Students learn how to link an organizational strategy into relatively small investment increments called epics, study the breakup of epics into features that can be delivered by program teams, and explore the decomposition of features into user stories delivered by single teams in individual sprints. This course also explores organizational factors that impact the use of agile approaches, such as culture, readiness, business practices, and the role of the PMO.

Agile Project Management Funda
The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of Agile Project Management Fundamentals. The course not only teaches students how to manage projects with an adaptive approach but also allows students to understand the differences and similarities between agile and traditional project management. Capstone
The Capstone Course is the culmination of the student's academic and professional experience in the Technology Management program. Over the course of the semester, students will be asked to apply the knowledge gained during the program to a project. With a focus on technology for social good, students will incorporate the skills necessary for analyzing key issues, thinking creatively, and making sound decisions in order to develop and execute plans. Projects will address global and local challenges. This course introduces students to privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines with significant security and privacy impact and requirements. The course primarily examines laws and regulations from the United States, but it also includes some coverage of international laws. The course is divided into four sections. First, students are exposed to broadly-applicable laws and regulations that address information security. Second, students receive an introduction to industry-specific guidelines and requirements (FISMA, NERC, HIPAA, HITECH, PSQIA3 , etc.). This course provides students with a solid foundation and a good understanding of practicing Agile with Scrum and Kanban. Scrum is a framework for designing, developing, and delivering products, services, and/or solutions of the highest value incrementally. Scrum is also known as a popular agile method in the computer software industry for addressing unknown and complex requirements iteratively and incrementally.. Scrum implementations require the use of self-organized teams who are flexible individuals willing to adapt quickly to change. Students will learn about the rules of the game specific to Scrum events (the sprint, sprint planning, daily Scrum, sprint review, and sprint retrospective), Scrum artifacts (e.g. product backlog, sprint backlog, and increment), and the importance of the definition of done. This course focuses on the fundamentals of requirements engineering and system architectures, and the relationship of the two areas. It details the requirements activities starting with Organizational goal expression or with a stakeholder need, to stakeholder requirement discovery, through to systems requirements derivation in both agile and traditional methods.
