Wayne McDonnell, Jr., MBA, understands that the business of sports is about far more than wins and losses. As Faculty Director and Associate Professor of the Practice for the Master’s in Sports Industry Management at Georgetown University, he sees the industry as a global ecosystem powered by strategy, innovation, relationships, and character.

“There’s so much going on in the business of sports, and Georgetown offers a fertile environment for students to explore, discover, and interact with like-minded people,” McDonnell says. With shifting markets, emerging technologies, expanding media platforms, and global investment reshaping the landscape, he believes students need more than textbook knowledge. They need access, perspective, and purpose.

“Our curriculum has to be thoughtful, cutting edge, and reflect the wants and needs of the industry; not only today, but in the future,” he explains. Courses are designed to sharpen analytical thinking, strengthen communication skills, and develop research capabilities that translate directly to real decision-making inside sports organizations.

“What makes our program stand out is our deep connection to the industry; our faculty are practitioners, not traditional academics,” McDonnell says. Nearly 80 faculty members actively work across professional leagues, agencies, media networks, and sports properties. “Our faculty are coming from their offices at places like the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) directly into class to teach our students.”

That real-world expertise shapes every aspect of the learning experience. Through guest speakers, on-site experiences, capstone collaborations, and special events, the industry is brought directly into the classroom. Students gain insight into live negotiations, sponsorship strategy, media rights, analytics, and operations from professionals who are navigating those challenges in real time.

The reach of Georgetown’s network extends far beyond the classroom walls. “Our alumni are everywhere in the sports industry and many return as faculty or capstone advisors,” McDonnell notes. That interconnected community gives students access to mentorship and professional relationships that often lead to internships and career opportunities.

For students pursuing the degree online, that connectivity remains just as strong. “Our online students still get the full Georgetown experience with guest speakers, events, and internship opportunities,” McDonnell emphasizes. Online learners can intern anywhere across the country and still receive Georgetown mentorship and faculty guidance.

Career development is a constant priority. McDonnell says. Students often don’t realize the breadth of roles available in sports, and the program helps them discover where their strengths align within this expansive industry.

Importantly, Georgetown welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds. “You don’t need a sports management undergrad degree; you could be an English major or biology major and still thrive here,” McDonnell explains. Intellectual curiosity, discipline, and passion matter more than prior specialization.

While access and advancement are key priorities, McDonnell believes the true foundation of leadership is character. “We want graduates who think with morals, act with integrity, and bring high character to the sports industry,” he says. Ethics are woven throughout the curriculum, informed in part by his own experiences in sports media and professional environments where preparation, transparency, and trust are essential.

Ultimately, McDonnell hopes students feel they are joining something larger than themselves. “When you come to our program, I want you to feel as if you’re part of a family, faculty who care, directors who care, and staff who care,” he says. Classmates become lifelong colleagues, and every course becomes an opportunity to expand one’s professional circle.

Through Georgetown’s online Master’s in Sports Industry Management, McDonnell is building more than careers. He is cultivating principled leaders prepared to shape the future of the global sports industry with expertise, connection, and unwavering character.
