Georgetown Launches Year-Round, Online Pre-College Programs for High School Students

Georgetown University Pre-College Online Program

Washington, D.C.—Beginning this summer, Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies (SCS) will be offering year-round, online pre-college programs to high school students interested in learning more about various fields, including medicine and law.

“The pandemic has presented many of us with countless challenges and a complete alteration of life as we once knew it,” says Kelly Otter, Dean of SCS. “Despite these immense obstacles, we have adapted and grown in ways that never seemed possible; and these innovative pre-college programs are a wonderful example of that evolution. We were able to recognize an area of opportunity for rising college students in the virtual environment and develop a brand-new suite of dynamic programs that will be instructed with unique perspectives, and provide a holistic and encouraging experience for curious-minded students.”

Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives heavily guided the creation of the program and will therefore highlight a wide range of voices and perspectives on each topic, featuring an intentional selection of diverse guest speakers and inclusive instruction. In addition, the programs are competitively priced and need-based scholarships are available. The first two courses—”How to Think Like an Attorney” and “Medical Research: Clinical Trials Resulting in Medical Discoveries”—will begin in July and are now accepting applications.

The program is offering various 2- and 4-week sessions throughout the year, and is available to students completing grades 9–12, ages 13 and up. The courses are flexible, completely asynchronous, and taught online by a distinguished group of Georgetown faculty members. There will also be opportunities for group collaboration and interaction with Georgetown undergraduate students and alumni who will serve as mentors.

“We are thrilled to take this first step in expanding our pre-college offerings beyond the summer term,” says Caitlin Cochran, Associate Dean of Summer and Special Programs at SCS. “This is all part of a larger strategy to increase access and affordability of our pre-college programs. Our hope is to share Georgetown's robust academic resources with more and more students on their learning journeys."
