Dr. Shaunna Barnhart's work explores the intersection of human-environment interactions with a focus on community revitalization, environmental and climate policy, environmental justice, and renewable energy transitions. She has collaborated with rural communities on various planning priorities including climate action plans and environmental resiliency plans.
With over 20 years of experience teaching in higher education, she has mentored student research both in and out of the classroom, including teaching research methods, mentoring student research and capstone theses, and collaborating with students on publications. This includes ongoing project work with students developing greenhouse gas inventories and climate action plans for local governments in Pennsylvania through a state program organized through the Department of Environmental Protection. As another example, she is also collaborating with an interdisciplinary team on air quality in central Pennsylvania coal communities. The mixed-methods research includes collecting air quality measurements, qualitative explorations of air quality perceptions and experiences, and risk communication.
She has been teaching with Georgetown's EDM program since 2018.
