Scott Applegate

A career military officer with more than 27 years of experience in leadership, management, communications and security, Mr. Applegate has served in a variety of positions in peacetime and war including two combat tours in Iraq.Among his assignments, Mr. Applegate served as the Current Operations Chief for Defensive Cyberspace Operations for the US Army, managing the defense and incident response of 2.2 million computers across multiple networks.

A career military officer with more than 27 years of experience in leadership, management, communications and security, Mr. Applegate has served in a variety of positions in peacetime and war including two combat tours in Iraq.


Among his assignments, Mr. Applegate served as the Current Operations Chief for Defensive Cyberspace Operations for the US Army, managing the defense and incident response of 2.2 million computers across multiple networks. He was also the Chief of the US Army Red Team conducting multidisciplinary, information warfare-based vulnerability assessments of major military commands on three continents.


Mr. Applegate currently serves on the Joint Staff, J5, Cyber Policy Division where he is the J5 Subject Matter Expert on cyberspace policy and the program manager for the Joint Staff's Cyberspace Security Cooperation and International Engagement portfolio. 


Mr. Applegate has a Bachelors Degree and two Masters Degrees. He has been teaching graduate level courses in cybersecurity since 2013. He is a published author and speaker. He currently holds the CISSP-ISSMP, CISSP, GCIH, and CEH certifications. Mr. Applegate lives in northern Virginia with his wife Sara, and their two children Preston and Marley. In his spare time he cooks, brews homemade beer, and enjoys running and exercise.
