Anna Smelova

Anna Smelova is a PhD candidate in Russian and Eastern European History at Georgetown University.

Her dissertation explores Russian exiled ethnographers' role in the "conceptual conquest" of Siberia in late imperial and early Soviet Russia. 

In 2016, Anna received a bachelor's degree in History from the Higher School of Economics in St Petersburg, Russia, and then pursued an MA in Comparative History with a minor in Religious Studies at Central European University (Budapest, Hungary). Her MA thesis focuses on the comparative analysis of the temperance organizations in St. Petersburg and Kazan at the end of the 19th-early 20th century. 

Anna's academic interests include Modern Russian History, the History of Siberia's Ethnographic Exploration, the Social History of Late Imperial Russia, and Intellectual History.
