Matthew A. Hawks is a recently retired Navy Captain who earned his Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2015. He also earned a Naval Engineer Degree and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 and an MBA from the University of Memphis in 2001.


Matthew’s Navy career began at the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in May 1994. He served as a submarine warfare officer, deploying overseas aboard USS Charlotte and analyzing recruiting for the Navy Recruiting Command. Joining the Navy’s engineering duty community, he managed major submarine overhauls at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, deployed to Djibouti managing humanitarian construction, and oversaw aspects of submarine programs at the Naval Sea Systems Command and the Program Executive Office for Submarines.


After earning his PhD, he joined the Naval Academy Mathematics Department, where for the next nine years he taught nearly one thousand Midshipmen in calculus, discrete mathematics, simulation, and many courses covering probability and statistics and their applications. Matthew retired from active duty in 2024. In addition to teaching, he enjoys volunteering with Trail Life USA and serving on the boards of the International Christian Statisticians and the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. He resides in Maryland with his wife and children.
