What does it take to cover breaking news? First, says veteran news producer Scarlette Whyte, you’ll need “a handy dandy phone list” so you can get in touch—at moment’s notice—with bureau chiefs, correspondents, cameramen, and anyone else you’ll need to cover the story. Also important is schooling yourself long before that event happens by reading everything you can in print and on social media, and “making sure you are the jack-of-all-trades who can jump into any situation.” Here, Whyte, now CBS’s director of professional development, talks with Gina Garcia, program director for the Georgetown University Master’s in Journalism program, about the varied skills journalists need to succeed in today’s newsrooms.
