About a week before the Jan. 6 insurgency, Donell Harvin led a team of analysts through a simulation that included an assault on the U.S. Capitol and the planting of explosives nearby. The analysts used strategic analytical techniques—tools that search for hidden biases and other data distortions—to create a scenario that bore an uncanny resemblance to the real attack a few days later.
