Velarde has covered news across Latin America and Southeast Asia, and has led multi-format coverage on climate, immigration and health topics.His coverage has been recognized by the Television Academy - Emmy Awards, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the Inter American Press Association, the Sunshine State Awards, among other organizations.
A native of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Velarde graduated from Universidad del Valle and has a master's in journalism from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies. He serves as vicepresident of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) D.C. chapter.
