Mustafa Ali

Javed Ali is a Towsley Foundation Policymaker in Residence at the University of Michigan's Ford School of Public Policy and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on counterterrorism and cybersecurity during the Fall 2018, Fall 2019, Fall 2020, and upcoming Winter 2021 semesters. He also previously taught a graduate counterterrorism course at SPP during the Spring 2020 semester.


Prior to academia, Javed had over 20 years of professional experience in national security and intelligence issues in Washington, D.C., serving in the Defense Intelligence Agency (2002-2003), the Department of Homeland Security (2003-2007), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2007-2018). While at the FBI, he also held senior positions on joint duty assignments at the National Intelligence Council (2010-2013), the National Counterterrorism Center (2013-2017), and the National Security Council under the Trump Administration (2017-2018).


He provides frequent commentary to ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, NPR, and other media outlets and publishes opinion pieces on The Hill, CNN.com, the Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, and Newsweek. He frequently guest lectures at other universities on counterterrorism and national security career paths, and is also the Executive Producer of a national security podcast called The Burn Bag.


Ali holds a BA in political science from the University of Michigan, a JD from the University of Detroit School of Law, and an MA in international relations from American University.
