Evan Barba
The world is awash in increasingly complex problems that do not adhere to disciplinary boundaries.
In my research I strive to advance the interdisciplinary knowledge needed to manage this complexity. I employ a systems science worldview to frame and formulate problems, I use design methods to synthesize and communicate solutions to those problems, and I treat computing as a medium for implementing, testing, and deploying those solutions. My goals as a scholar and educator are to demonstrate how scale-based thinking can reveal new insights and new problems, to teach others to use this perspective in their own work, and to assemble these multi-scale methods and perspectives into a design framework that I refer to as recursive design.
